Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric is a bizarre detour for the blue blur that trades high-speed thrills for a clunky, slow-paced action-adventure experience. Tasked with stopping a generic cyborg snake named Lyric from unleashing a robot apocalypse, Sonic and his redesigned crew spend more time brawling and navigating tedious platforming sections than actually running. It is a notable cautionary tale of a project struggling to find its identity, resulting in a disjointed mess of repetitive combat, technical hiccups, and uninspired level design that feels like a hollow imitation of better platformers.
